READING PROGRAMS


Accelerated Reader - Students choose a book from many outstanding titles in the LIS media and then take a correlating quiz.  We have access to over 25,000 quizzes!  Fifth grade students are required to earn 15 AR points per grading period.  Sixth grade students are required to earn 20 AR points per grading period.  Click on the here to view the LIS AR handout.  

Book-it - An optional reading program that students read a certain amount of minutes per month to earn a Pizza Hut coupon.  This program runs from October to March.

6 Hour Reading - An optional reading program that students read at least six hours to earn a Six Flags Great America ticket.  This program runs throughout the month of February.

IN Young Hoosier Book Race - An optional reading program that students read 10 or all of the 20 selected Indiana Young Hoosier books.  Students reading 10 of the titles and passing the correlating AR quizzes earn a free book.  Students reading all 20 of the titles and pass the correlating quizzes, earn a free book plus a Portage 16 gift card for $15.00.  Students have all school year to read these books to earn prizes.  Click here to view the Indiana YH handout.

Book Battle - Teams from both LIS and WIS read books from a selected list,  then compete in a Jeopardy-style format battle sometime in April.  Both fifth and sixth graders may participate.  The Book Battles alternate each year at each intermediate.  Prizes such as T-shirts, food coupons, and Barnes and Noble gift cards can be won by the teams!!!

Fazoli's Friendly Reader Program - Students read any five books and record the titles on the Fazoli's bookmark to receive a free kid's meal.  (An adult meal must be purchased.)

OTHER EVENTS

Book Fairs - We will have a book fair in November and in March this year.  The fall book fair's theme is "Reading is Out of this World!"  The book fair will run Friday, November 4 - Thursday, November 10.  Friday through Tuesday the hours will be 8:00 am-3:15 pm.  On Wednesday and Thursday, Parent/Teacher Conference days, the hours will be 8:00 am-8:00 pm.  The spring book fair's theme has not yet been revealed.  It will be held March 12-16.
