Yost Elementary

Susan Harmison is the School Counselor at Yost Elementary School. As the Elementary Counselor, she works with students, teachers, and families.  She talks with students on a variety of issues including:  divorce, grief and loss, friendships, social skills, anger management, ADHD symptoms, anxiety and academics. Games, books, and activity worksheets are some of the counseling tools she uses when meeting with students individually or in groups.  Her counseling office has a lot of calming tools, fidgets, puppets, to give students something to do with their hands as we explore feelings and problem solve.   Students may be referred for individual or group counseling by their teachers, parents, the Student Assistance Team, or even self-referrals.  Classroom lessons are usually teacher requested or based on a particular classroom need.  Mrs. Harmison also evaluates English Language Learners.

Mrs. Harmison has a Bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders (Speech and Hearing) and a Master's Degree in Elementary Counseling from the Pennsylvania State  University. She also has attended Indiana University Northwest for Special Education credits.  Prior to coming to Duneland, Mrs. Harmison was an Elementary Counselor in Pennsylvania.  She began working in the Duneland School Corporation as a paraprofessional in the Learning Disabilities Resource Room at Jackson Elementary School and a Special Education teacher at Yost Elementary School.
